About the Portuguese Podengo

The Portuguese Podengo is one of those breeds that stops you in your tracks the first time you see one move. Ancient in origin, built for the rugged terrain of Portugal, these dogs were hunting rabbits, deer, and boar long before most modern breeds existed. They come in three distinct sizes, each non-interbred, and whether you have a smooth coat or the more recently developed wire coat, you have a dog that is athletic, sharp, and deeply self-reliant. Podengo owners tend to be a certain kind of person: active, patient, and genuinely interested in what their dog thinks. Training takes time because this breed has its own ideas, and experienced owners know to work with that rather than against it. They thrive in agility, coursing, and nose work, and they bond fiercely with the right family. This shop celebrates the Podengo and the people who truly get them.
