About the American Foxhound

The American Foxhound is one of the oldest and most historically significant breeds in the United States, with roots that trace directly back to George Washington, who selectively bred and meticulously documented his pack at Mount Vernon. These are big, athletic, scenthound dogs built for covering ground at a steady pace for hours, and that purpose-driven energy is a defining part of who they are. Owners of American Foxhounds know that this breed is not for everyone, which makes the community around them especially tight-knit and devoted. They are gentle, affectionate, and remarkably good with children and other dogs, but they need space, activity, and ideally a pack to feel truly at home. That iconic baying howl is not a flaw to their people, it is a feature, a piece of living American history carried in every note. Celebrating the American Foxhound means celebrating independence, endurance, and a breed woven into the fabric of this country from its earliest days.
